Doubts About Gastric Bypass? One Woman’s Final Effort to Lose Weight Without Surgery

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

By Kaye Bailey One may think that on a website called LivingAfterWLS you would never read about conventional dieting: losing weight the old fashioned way by eating less and exercising more. One would think WLS proponents would say, It cant be done. The only way to lose massive weight is with surgery. We should shake our heads with all-knowing smugness and think, Well, it wont be long and she, too, will be on the surgical table. But I dont think that is fair. Who among us, in the first two difficult post-op years hasnt questioned, Was this really my last hope? Was this the only way to become healthy by losing weight? Ive questioned myself dozens of times, Kaye, did you really give it your all before you had surgery? I dont know the answer. It is too late for me to ask questions. My stomach has been chopped in two and my intestines re-routed for life. But its not too late for Kelly McCamey to ask questions and thats exactly what she did. One extraordinary LivingAfterWLS community member, Kelly McCamey was jumping through the pre-surgical hoops early this summer. During the approval process she asked herself, “Did you really give it your all, Kelly? Or are you escaping and doing this because you are weak?” Told she had severe sleep apnea she was denied surgery unless she submitted to using a machine to aid her breathing while she slept. At 52 and 287 pounds Kelly, 37, had a BMI of 52.5. Kelly was in trouble, but refused the machine. By refusing the machine she was denied surgery. I was determined now that I “had” to do this on my own, I had to quit playing and work out, watch my calories and stop the pity I had (for myself) because I was so big. I thought that if I gave myself this one last chance, I would really do it; before altering my life with gastric bypass surgery. Recalling years of obesity Kelly said, I was always too afraid to go to the doctor for fear they would put me on the scale. I did not take care of my health because I was ashamed to talk about my weight condition. I used to think nobody saw it; that I had everyone fooled. Not so! Fat is fat, no matter how you view it. So, it was at this point that I realized I had to do something fast for my own health. Kelly faced reality saying, I am a 37-year-old female who is very overweight. Kelly joined the a nationally known weight loss program on July 11, 2005. I met with a very nice representative named Sophia. It was at that point I realized how miserable I really was. As Sophia took my picture I saw my own face with the sickness that I have never seen before. I looked so unhealthy. I never believed I looked so unhealthy. But, I know I owed this to myself, I have always put others first, hid from the mirrors, hid behind the home and never wanted to do anything. I was always the first one to say, “No, I can’t go, I have something to do”. But that was so far from the truth. The weight loss program she joined has Kelly on a strict 1500 calorie a day diet, and her daily routine includes exercise, something she didnt enjoy before. She checks in on Monday evenings with her counselor Sophia. At her 5-week weigh-in she was down 21 pounds and feeling fabulous. That 21-pound weight loss dropped her BMI to 48.6. I feel so good, I can’t begin to tell you! I went to a softball game Thursday and I didn’t have to turn sideways to go through the turn styles! To me that was great! I would normally hide at home and sulk, but this time I went out with pride, even though I have a long way to go, I am really giving it my all. Look how far Kelly has come in just five weeks. I am personally awed and inspired by Kelly for her gutsy determination to lose weight the old fashioned way when all she really had to do was submit to the nighttime breathing machine and then have gastric bypass. Kelly acknowledges that losing weight is never easy. I am more pumped than anything, and I have come to the conclusion this is my way of life. I will always be that pretty girl that wants to come out, but not accepted by society as an overweight 37-year-old. I have been miserable and lonely because of my weight. Kelly wont have to be miserable in her own body much longer. She is on the right track to understanding what it takes to become healthier and happier by achieving a healthy weight. Kelly understands vigilance to eating and exercise is her new way of life. Kelly has agreed to share with LivingAfterWLS her story as she strives, just like the rest of us, to become a healthy weight in a world that makes it so easy to be fat. I know she is going to do just fine. Change Is Constant

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

By Terry Weber Did you know you are carrying change with you every day of your life? Reach into your pocket and you will probably find a handful of coins. It is what we call: change. Just as change in the form of coins in your pocket is always with you so are other kinds of change. In fact, change is very common and it is something that is always with us as a part of our lives in one form or another. As you probably know, the speed of change is always accelerating. Nothing is final. The world changes fast. Think about this: It took 1,750 years after Christ for the worlds knowledge to double. By 1900 it had doubled again. By 1950, it doubled again and then again by 1960 it had doubled again. This year there will be more than a hundred million pages of technical papers published, regarding changes. In fact, the current estimate says the world’s knowledge doubles every 18 months - or less. Today we can say: the world is changing more rapidly than ever before. A business expert once said: We’re entering an age of acceleration. In fact, because of the explosive power of exponential growth (growth that is rapidly becoming greater in size) the 21st century will be equivalent to 20,000 years of progress at today’s rate of progress. Therefore, organizations may have to be ready to redefine themselves at a faster and faster pace than ever before. Today we are told that the only constant is change. But what people dont recognize is that the world itself has changed because the rate of change is always accelerating. In fact, even our world concept of what it means to be human is rapidly changing as we are forced to merge our lives with our new technologies.Since God is the ultimate creator of all, and because creating is what God, the Creator does, you can be sure He is always at work — creating. And, as He creates, there are changes. Therefore, the changes will go on forever. Now, if it is your goal in life to make something change, you must, of course, change something. We, as Gods people must therefore make up our minds to also: embrace change. The dictionary says that when something changes it becomes or is made different. We need to expect change. We live a life of change so — get used to change. In fact. we should learn to look forward to the changes that will take place in our lives every day. Some people Ive met say they hate change. Well, I dont believe them, but that is what they say. My observation is if a person is not changing, that person is in a rut, and is either stagnant or soon will be. Which are you? Are you in a rut? Are you stagnant? Whichever you are, it is time for a change! Why? Because if you will prayerfully examine the changes in your life you will find that all of them with 20/20 hindsight were changes for your eventual or ultimate good. They were changes where God — who knows the future–, revealed things to you that could not have been understood or revealed to you in any other way. It has been said: A revelation is not a revelation until it is a revelation to me. So, when you see change happen, have faith. Accept it as good and, above all, trust God. Things change. Friendships fade. Money is spent. Glory is forgotten. Power is lost. Seasons change. So do people. Day turns into darkness. Sorrow to joy. Pain is eased. Rules are broken. Promises are forgotten. Trusts betrayed. Love cools. Hate dies. Stars fall. Things change. Life on earth ends. But God is always God! For me, some of the changes in my life have included: Changes from child to adult. School changes. Navy life changes. My decision to follow Jesus. My mothers death. My college days. My marriage. My business. The birth of our children. My career changes. My wifes death. My re-marriage. The day of the fire in my business. My retirement. My visit to Alaska. And that great expectation of my ultimate change: my life everlasting–with Jesus. Always keep in mind, as Christians; we live in a Good Friday world filled with many troubles and much pain. But we are also, in every sense, Easter Sunday people. By that I mean we are people who are expectant and optimistic. We are certain that, in spite of the troubles of the Good Friday kind of life we live each day, we know our personal, individual Easter Sunday is coming! It will be a day when our great expectations are made real. A time when we will be transformed and made over as we flow into our new, eternal life with Jesus our Lord. So, the next time you look at the change, all of those coins you carry around inyour pocket, let them remind you to take to heart the wisdom of the words inscribed on those coins: In God we trust. In this way you can accept and welcome the idea that — change is the only constant. 5 Tips To Keep Marital Bliss Alive After You Retire!

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

By Allie Ochs Lets face it retirement is a time of great transition for spouses. Ample free time and drastic lifestyle changes can be a burden or a blessing for your marriage. Regardless of whether one or both spouses retire, the secret to a smooth transition is planning before you retire. For example, if one or both of you have been task-driven individuals with their own careers, a 7/24 marriage may not be to your liking. Retiring couples who have lived independent and relatively separate lives may become frustrated and bored being joined at the hip. Others may rejoice in spending more time with each other. The most important step to take prior to retiring is: 1. PLAN AHEAD. Know your personality and design your golden years accordingly. If you are a busy bee needing outside stimulation, plan ahead how you will keep yourself occupied. Get a part-time job, volunteer, write a book, get a pup, complete home renovations, play golf, join an organization or take up a hobby. Know what you will do with your excess time before you get on each others nerves. While retirement is a natural process of live, most retirees experience the same effects as with the loss of a job. No longer needed at work coupled with reduced social contacts many retirees question their identities. Feelings of worthlessness or even depression are common and can harm the quality of your relationship. You owe it to yourself and your spouse to: 2. LIVE WITH A PURPOSE. Shift the focus from yourself to others. Contribute your knowledge and life experience to organizations. Get involved with youth groups helping young people flourish. Socializing with your children and grandchildren will keep you young and alert. Read, cruise the Internet, exercise, learn a new language or skill. Do anything that keeps your brain working and your heart filled with passion. If only one spouse is retiring, conflict over who does what and how time will be spent, may arise. The at-home spouse may be expected to do more chores including those they never did before. Arguments over time allotted for chores or play may develop. To avoid conflict: 3. EXERCISE MUTUAL RESPECT. As the still-working spouse, dont penalize your retired partner for having reached the golden years. Respect that your spouse deserves the freedom, time, enjoyment, respect and dignity of retirement. While he or she can be expected to pitch-in more, respect that your spouse needs the freedom to find his or her purposeful life as a retiree. Again, talk about and plan ahead how time will be spent prior to retirement, it will save you many arguments. Staying busy has proven to be beneficial for all retirees. How to keep busy may vary from one person to the next. Because of diverse expectations it is often difficult to find the right blend of shared hobbies and time alone. Some couples are thrilled to do everything together, while others need and enjoy some time on their own. Allow each other to: 4. BE HAPPY. Retirement should be a happy time. It is about doing the things you couldnt before. This could be anything from sleeping in to travelling to unknown places. Anything from learning about astrology to helping provide clean water in an undeveloped country. Whenever possible you should support your spouse to live a happy retirement in alignment with his or her personality. Always remember, your partner is just as important as you are. Many retirees use this time to strengthen their marriage. Previous work distractions and time commitments often lead to stale marriages. Now is the time to create intimacy and secure marital bliss in your sunset years. Get busy and: 5. KEEP THE LOVE GOING. Love is not something that you have, it is something that you do. Now that you have more time, be romantic. Plan for romantic dinners, movies, vacations or picnics. Compliment each other, cherish each other and surprise each other with romantic treats. Take time to talk to each other, communicate your feelings, your fears and your passions. Make love whenever possible, it is a sure way to create intimacy. Remember love has no expiry date and a loving relationship is your ticket to glorious golden years. 2005 Allie Ochs, Relationship Expert, Coach, Speaker and the Author of Are You Fit To Love? Wedding Tips

Sunday, January 27th, 2008

By Ryan Bell Weddings are made in heaven, they say, but they have to be organized on earth. For most of us wedding is a once-in-lifetime affair when someone most special becomes yours for the rest of your life. So certainly you want your wedding to be special, you want to make it a perpetually memorable occasion, an occasion you can visit in your memories and savor its moments frame by frame. As it is required for any major event, your wedding needs to be planned in advance to keep away the unexpected disasters that sometimes choose the oddest of times to manifest. We advise that you maintain a binder or a digital scheduler to track all the aspects of your wedding. Maintain separate tabs for things such as bakery, ceremony, catering, florist, music, reception, photography, transportation, etc., so that you can keep a track of what’s done and remains to be done. During the planning stage you’ll be gleaning items like brochures, phone numbers, vendor estimates and bids, song sheets, receipts, pictures and contracts. Along with these you’ll obviously collect pictures of wedding gowns, bridesmaids’ gowns, flower arrangements, centerpieces and bridal bouquets, jewelry, photo samples given you by photographers, wedding accessories and other pictures that will help you plan your dream wedding. You can organize all these wedding related things with the help of your binder. You’ll have to schedule in advance your meetings with different wedding vendors, professionals and service providers. Here are a few pointers to make your wedding as seamless as possible: - DO THINGS IN ADVANCE Things that can be done in advance…do them. This frees your time for more pressing, last-minute chores, and gives you more bargaining power because of the time you have to look and ask around. - CHOOSE A WEDDING DAY CAREFULLY Try choosing a day that’s suitable to all for your wedding if you want all your loved ones to attend it. - MAINTAIN A COMPREHENSIVE TO-DO LIST This way you can keep crossing the things you have done. - GUESTS LIST Believe it or not, sometimes we forget to invite people we really want to be present there. Make sure every important person is on the list, along with the contact details. [o] CHOOSE YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER AND CATERER CAREFULLY They are the most important components of your wedding because pleasant food generates pleasant atmosphere, and the photographs that are clicked on that date are the precious moments captured for the coming generations. We hope you have a splendid wedding and a harmonious future together. 7 Tips How To Read His Sexual Body Language

Saturday, January 26th, 2008

By Coco Swan Is he hot for you or not? Is that sexy smile aimed at you? You can learn how to understand his flirting gestures. Interpreting his male body language has never been easier! 1: Shifting his weight back and forth on his heels. This is considered to be subconsciously a mirroring of knee trembling. One of the surest body language gestures that he is hot for you. 2: Hand pointing in the direction of his pelvis. If he has his hand in his front trouser pocket, or has his hand resting on his belt, with a finger pointing straight down to his pelvis then anyone looking at him is drawn to his crotch. His whole body is highlighting his groin in this highly sexual body language stance. 3: Stroking his nose. When a man spies a woman he is attracted to, then unconscious preening begins. Other body language gestures to look out for are rearranging his clothing, rubbing a finger along an eyebrow or pushing a hand through his hair. Along with the tie, the nose is a phallic symbol. 4: Playing with his tie. The tie is basically a signpost to his penis, according to body language experts. If he should start playing with or stroking his tie, then there is a great chance that he is interested in you. By taking the initiative yourself and stroking his tie admiringly, you are giving him a very strong sexual signal. 5: Sitting with legs wide open on the barstool. By sitting like this he is offering you a great view of his crotch. If he should start to rock back and forth on the stool as well, look out. The male body language here spells the one thing on his mind is you. 6: Standing with hands on his hips. By standing like this he is emphasizing his size. By taking up more space he is appearing larger and more domineering. In cave dwelling times females chose the bigger males for better means of survival, which explains why many girls go for the powerful and strapping type. 7: Pelvic display. The more enthusiastic the guy is, the further apart his legs will be, irrespective of whether he is standing up or sitting down. This is considered to be very primitive flirting body language and is also behavior seen in the monkey families. Basically he is showing you his fantastic package, on a purely subconscious level, of course. Guys have basic primal urges and are still operating off caveman instincts subconsciously. Men are still using the same body language as they did in prehistoric times, much of which is also seen in the animal kingdom. Compared to us girls, guys have a much smaller range of flirting body language gestures and those that they do use are very easy to spot. Luckily for us. Obviously reading his body can be easier than reading his mind. Look for groupings of the above for highly interested flirting signals. Three or more and he is yours! Fortunately, now we no longer live in caves, we can at least expect some civilized gestures such as a drink and conversation before being dragged off to the modern day equivalent of the cave. Cheers! Pharmaceutical Industry

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Sharon_White] Sharon White The consumer has almost no role in purchase decision making. Further, there is an unusual level of control to the industry either by regulations or self imposed practices. The political analysis of this industry has shown increasing political links of Russia with the west support the adaptation of western business methods that neutralizes the access to Baltic States. China is approaching the deadlines of World Trade organization to open up its economy sector by sector after joining the organization. The war against terrorism is developing a new world order. Democracy is yet to come for some states where pharmaceutical industry has major role to play. Therefore pharmaceutical industry has grown its need for customers. Economic analysis recently provided has demonstrated China is expected to become the fifth largest drug market in the world by 2010. Indian Pharmaceutical Industry is growing at about 8 to 9 percent annually. Recent increase in oil prices has certain effects on corporate share prices where it make difficult to pharmaceutical companies to in vest in R&D. One of the main demand industry is seeking is to shorten the time taken to get full approval to market products since the invention of formulas. This is because in some cases where manufactures experience the risks of patents getting expired even before the product is launched to the market. It can be expected in tighter regulatory pressure for developing countries for pirated production particularly with their increasing commitment to WTO. Price regulation schemes are well imposed in many countries to protect the consumer from high bargaining power of patented products. The debate will continue between animal right campaigners and pharmaceutical companies for using animals in drug testing. The article was produced by the writer of masterpapers.com. Contact Lens Discount Coupons

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

By Elizabeth Morgan Discount coupons are tickets offered by retailers or manufacturers to be used in their retail stores for a particular product which can be purchased at a special discounted rate. This is a marketing technique used by retailers and manufacturers. These coupons are widely found in mailings, newspapers and magazines. However, the trend today is to obtain coupons from the Internet. Practically every online contact lens manufacturer or seller will offer discount coupons to its buyers. Online discount coupon codes are similar to the print version of the coupons, and provide similar benefits and deals. The major difference is that the purchases are done online, and instead of heading down to the store to redeem your discount, you redeem your discount online using coupon code, which will also indicate if the discount coupon includes free shipping and other goodies. Online discount coupons also come with expiration dates. There are some things to keep in mind before you use discount coupons to purchase contact lenses, especially the online discount coupons. When entering the discount contact lens coupon code, make sure that you enter it exactly the way it is written on the webpage, because most coupons are case-sensitive. Some discount contact lens coupons do not specify the brand or the specified item on sale; therefore, it is wise to check if the brand on sale is what you are looking for. Before confirming your purchase, make sure the discount is reflected in your total amount payable. There are lots of discount coupons available for most of the contact lens brands that are popular, so choose wisely and enjoy the great deals. Relationship Advice: C is for Creation

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

By Jeff Herring When you enter into a long term love relationship such as marriage, you have created a brand new sociological unitcalled a family. This is a good thing. The problem is that most couples spend more time planning a 3 day get away than they do on talking about how they want their relationship to be. Creating on purpose Here in front of you is now a blank story book, and you get to fill the pages. You can fill them with good stuff, you can fill them with bad stuff, or tear the pages if you are not careful. So here are some crucial questions to consider as your create this relationship on purpose: 1) How do we want to spend our time? 2) How close do we want to be? 3) How are we going to handle money? 4) How do we protect our relationship from outside emotional attachments that are not good for the relationship? 5) How are we going to handle the domestic chores part of living under the same roof? 6) How do we want to handle conflict when it arises? 7) Are we going to hang the toilet paper over or under? The only time these questions can be dangerous is when they are not discussed. Two things happen then: 1) assumptions are made and 2) expectations are then formed, accurate or not. The best way to predict the future of your relationship is to create it. Visit SecretsofGreatRelationships.com for tips and tools for creating and growing a great relationship.
