Advanced Lipoprotein Fingerprinting

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

By Ibrahim Machiwala Advanced Lipoprotein Fingerprinting is a more precise cholesterol test that allows doctors to identify health risks that traditional screens miss. Doctors now have a precise reading not only of a patient’s cholesterol levels but other independent risk factors known to be associated with heart disease. The process separates lipids in the blood to create a detailed cholesterol profile that helps doctors identify patients at risk for heart disease. The detailed graph allows a doctor to precisely analyze a patient’s overall risk profile and monitor the effectiveness of a diet or treatment regimen. This advanced analytical techniques that can help doctors diagnose early warning signs for coronary heart disease, which kills more than 2,600 Americans a day, according to the American Heart Association. High LDL cholesterol is a major cause of coronary heart disease, according to the National Cholesterol Education Program. Aiming to identify early risk factors, the National Cholesterol Education Program issued guidelines calling for more comprehensive cholesterol screens as well as other risk factors not included in the cholesterol screen. Early detection, particularly in youth, is the key to slowing down the development of heart disease in later life. Advanced cholesterol screening is a valuable tool that is gaining acceptance among medical insurers. Texas A&M University researchers created Advanced Lipoprotein Fingerprinting as a more precise cholesterol test that allows doctors to identify health risks that traditional screens miss. LipidLabs further refined the Advanced Lipoprotein Fingerprinting Process and made Advanced Lipoprotein Fingerprinting available for commercialization. LipidLabs’ results translate to more accurate and specific data on which to make clinical judgments and guide patient therapy and prevention at reasonable costs. Clinical Highlights: 1. Screen men over age 34 and women over age 44 every five years. 2. The decision to screen men age 20 to 34 years, women age 20 to 44 years and anyone over 75 years should be based on individual preferences of patient and provider. 3. Measure cholesterol fractionation and provide nutrition and exercise assessment every five years. If likelihood of follow-up is low and patient is not fasting, consider checking total cholesterol and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. General Awareness Activities: Employer, School and Community Education Awareness ActivitiesMany educational and medical individuals are playing very impressive and crucial role by putting their efforts in helping to increase the number of children and adults to present themselves for appropriate lipid screenings.Awareness initiative programming conducted includes: Posters for company bulletin boards General screening information “tents” for tables in reception areas, cafeterias, employee lounges, locker rooms, and other such places Incentives to increase compliance with and awareness of guideline screening recommendations Information on the importance of regular lipid screening can be included as part of a larger health promotion/disease prevention initiative which includes not only cholesterol and healthy lifestyles but aware people of heart diseases and appropriate health care utilization as well. Health care providers should: Establish a process to identify those needing cholesterol screening Make educational brochures available at time of visit Select educational materials based on a nutrition and exercise assessment Utilize a system encouraging patients to attend classes if laboratory results suggest benefit from changing nutritional and/or exercise behaviors. Doctors sometimes also make visits to offices and schools for conducting lipid screenings. Total Cholesterol >200; LDL >130; HDL200? Individuals with a total cholesterol less than or equal to 200 mg/dL (and HDL-cholesterol of 40 mg/dL or above or triglycerides less than or equal to 200) have a desirable cholesterol level are advised to repeat cholesterol fractionation in five years. Super Foods from Home Vegetable Gardens

Monday, May 26th, 2008

By Sally Morton Most of you have heard about super foods. These super foods are classified as being rich in vitamins, nutrients and/or minerals that are believed by nutritionists to prevent disease, promote longevity and good health. High on the list of super foods are: Carrots Broccoli Spinach Chili peppers Mushrooms Tomatoes Garlic Oats Beans Green Tea Lots of fruits: Bananas, Strawberries, Papaya, Pineapple, Mango, Citrus Fruits, Apricots Salmon What is the best way to incorporate super foods into your diet? Grow your own, of course. Vegetable gardens are in vogue in todays health-conscious society. Its estimated that 50 percent of American families have vegetable gardens. Its easy to grow vegetables and herbs. Use an unused space in your backyard or side yard. If space is limited, try a container vegetable garden, a raised bed garden, a window box garden, a vertical vegetable garden, or run vines up trellises. You might even mix vegetable plants in with your existing landscaping. Even if youve never planted a vegetable garden before, you dont have much to lose by giving it a try. With the abundance of free information available to you over the Internet, there is no reason anyone cannot do it. Benefits of vegetable gardens: Stretching the food budget means you have more money left over to do other things. Your vegetable garden is the ultimate source of FRESH vegetables (you cant get any fresher than to harvest them yourself!) Assurance of getting the highest nutritional content possible from every harvest. Thats not always the case with store-bought produce=Better health plus peace of mind! You know exactly what fertilizers or pesticides were used and the condition of the soil in which the vegetables were grown. You get bragging rights. Ive seen grown men proud as a peacock about the size of the vegetables they grew. You could even enter your vegetables in contests and displays, such as at the county fair. Vegetable gardens pay lifelong dividends in better health. Take up a complimentary (and potentially lucrative) hobby: food photography. Promote family togetherness when you get the whole gang involved in planting, harvesting and food preparation of vegetables, fruits and herbs. Helps you lose weight two ways: 1) The extra exercise and 2) Vegetables are lower in calories than junk food! Its a fun, healthy hobby that gives back many times more than what you put into it. Vegetables and herbs are not just healthy for you, they can also be decorative and ornamental. I dont know why working in the soil promotes a sense of serenity and peacefulness, but any gardener will tell you it does. ### Sally Hansley Morton is an internationally published freelance writer, and writer for Suite 101s Vegetable Gardens. Child Abuse

Saturday, May 17th, 2008

By Jelly Gupta Children are considered as future of a country. If their present is bright and healthy, the future of the country would also dazzle. In the process of development, the child goes through many stages. As an infant, he receives love and care of his family members. After few years when he starts going to school he receives guidance from teachers. Everybody whether a relative, neighbor, friend or guardian wants to give love and affection to the child but intentionally or unintentionally they may upset the child through some unwanted action of theirs. Parents, teachers and well-wishers should listen to the problems of children and try to solve them. All parents want to fulfill the basic needs of their children like food, shelter, clothing and they make every effort to meet their requirements. But all their demands cannot be fulfilled due to obvious reasons like financial or moral constraints. Most of the times parents or guardians hurt the kids due to their own problems like if a parent is involved in his personal problem, he will loose his temper over a minor mistake made by the child. Parents may develop a bad temperament due to multifarious reasons like scolding by boss, argument with spouse or influence of liquor or intake of drugs or any other similar reason. But the brunt of this bad temperament is ultimately borne by the child. The parents expect their child to think and act beyond his age. Actually, in many cases, parents themselves are guilty of making their children undisciplined. In a fit of anger parents immediately slap or hit the child impulsively. No food or water is given to the child for number of hours. In acute cases physical punishment given by the parents or guardians may also result in bodily injuries to the child. There are number of examples in the society when children are sexually abused at their own homes by their guardians. Sometimes neglect of the children is necessitated by the dire needs of the family. In many cases due to financial constraints, mothers of very young children have to work at odd hours to fulfill the very basic needs of the family. Most of the parents and guardians do not deliberately neglect a child. Some unfortunate parents have to neglect the child due to unavoidable circumstances. Sometimes a guardian neglects a child because he also did not get attention of anyone when he himself was a child. He gets a satisfaction by doing so. In some cases the neglected child came into the world when he was not wanted means he is not a planned baby. Some parents or guardians are not aware of the ways to correct a child without giving him physical punishment. Sometimes child beating is a result of the frustration of the parents. There are many other ways to improve a child other than corporeal punishment. If a child misbehaves parents should not also behave in the same way for example shouting at them or hitting them. They should try to remain cool and tell about the bad effects of the misconduct to the child. They should avoid scolding the children in front of others. This demoralizes the child and he becomes a rebel. Never shout at the child at once. Give him some moments to calm down and then ask about his difficulties. Whenever a child conducts himself very well, parents should give a pat at the back. First parents and guardians should learn the ways to manage their frustration on their own. All the people in the society must be alert and vigilant and wherever and whenever they see the signs of child abuse must report to the designated authority. If cuts are seen on the body of the child or signs of burns are found. If the child looks malnourished, dirty, lack of involvement, does not show any interest playing with other children; all are symptoms of child abuse. These ill-treated children live under the shadow of fear and agony. Child-neglect has dreadful effects on the children and they may even die due to the sheer neglect by the parents or guardians. They face various kinds of physical and psychological problems, like, decrement of learning ability, aggressive or violent behavior and shy nature. The ill effects of the abuse or neglect last for much longer period than anticipated. They may have lack of emotional bonds with their families, or they may resort to drugs or alcohol at the later stage. People hesitate to report the matter to social agencies as they intend to remain away from the others family matters. People should understand that reporting such a case is in the best interest of the unfortunate child. The doctor can assist the parents and the guardian well in this concern. Social agencies also conduct classes for enabling the parents to look after the child well. Community centers, counselors, Religious groups etc. are also doing their best efforts to eradicate this problem. Hotline numbers are available to report to social agencies responsible for protection of the children. On getting the report regarding child-abuse these agencies take the steps according to the requirement. Child Abuse or neglect greatly hampers the overall growth of the child. As children are the future of any country, every necessary step should be taken to ensure their development in all spheres of the life. http://www.nrilegalservices.com About The Author Jelly Gupta is a law graduate and has a keen interest in social issues. To Weave Or Not To Weave: The Hair Extension Question

Friday, May 9th, 2008

By Michael Barrows There is no doubt that long, flowing hair is in, but many people who desire to have long hair are unable to achieve the right look no matter how long they let their hair grow. For this reason, many turn to hair extensions to get that look they’ve always dreamed of. Whether their hair is sparse and thin or ethnic and curly, many have found that they can have long hair through hair extension. There are two major types of hair extension: strands and wefts. Strands use techniques that apply 20 to 50 strands of synthetic or natural hair to your own hair by weaving, heat fusing, gluing, clamping, or using waxes and polymers. Hair extension wefts, on the other hand, use wefts of hair that are sewn into a small braid of your own hair that has been put across your scalp for the purpose of hair extension. With both types of hair extension you can achieve dramatic results. You can thicken and lengthen your hair instantly. And the hair extensions can be matched up perfectly to your own hair. With hair extensions, you shampoo, style and do everything that you would normally do to your own hair. If you want to change colors, you can. If you want to perm, you can. (There may be some restrictions with certain types of synthetic hair extension). As with all salon services, there is some upkeep associated with hair extensions. The cost and frequency of your upkeep appointments will depend largely on what type of extensions that you purchase. The amount of damage to your natural hair and longevity of your hair extension will also be determined by which type of hair extensions you choose. ” Strands. This type of hair extension causes the most damage to your natural hair because the technique always involves attaching the extensions to your natural hair shaft by chemical means. As you can imagine by the name of some of the application methods used such as heat fusing and gluing, the damage can be substantial. While the strand hair extension does not cost as much as other procedures, there is a good deal of upkeep. These hair extensions normally have to be completely re-done every few months. And because these types of extensions cause so much damage to your hair shaft, they are not a good option for allowing your natural hair to grow out while you wear the extensions. ” Wefts. Weft hair extensions are by far the best types of hair extensions. The weft itself looks like a curtain of hair attached together at the top and free flowing at the bottom. These hair extensions are attached to your head by sewing them into a tiny braid made out of your own hair. The effects achieved with this technique are very natural and no one can see the braids or wefts of hair unless you show them. Since hair growth will push your braids off of your scalp, in order to keep this type of hair extension looking fresh, you need to return to your stylist every 6 to 8 weeks to have your wefts taken out and put back in close against your scalp. So, if you always wanted long hair but have never been able to accomplish it, maybe hair extensions are just what you need. But be sure to weigh all of your options and the costs carefully before deciding to get hair extensions. Michael Barrows’ website gives great advice for good hair. Read Low Cost Consolidation & Student Loan Options

Sunday, May 4th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Dorene_Patterson]Dorene Patterson There are a multitude of school loan programs available for the consolidation of student loans. Choosing the option best suited for you and your financial situation isn’t as complicated as all the hype may lead you to believe. With a little effort and a point in the right direction you’ll be choosing a low cost program for the consolidation of your student loans in no time. The first place to start is becoming familiar with the type of loans you currently have. Who the lender is, what the rates are for each loan, and what the grace periods are. Then you need to determine if they are Private Student Loans or Federal Student Loans. And, you need to know which ones are eligible for consolidation and which ones aren’t. Once you’ve determined which school loans qualify, the next step is deciding what type of consolidation student loan programs will be best for you. Even if your current student loans have varying terms and re-payment schedules with more than one lending company, the chances of being eligible for the consolidation of student loans is very high. This is due in part to the fact that even with poor credit, the worst that does is cause one to pay a bit more for the interest rate, but usually doesn’t effect ones qualifying for consolidation of student loans. This will take a bit of research on your part as the options can be quite diverse. Below is just a brief list of some of the types of student loans programs currently available for consolidation. Doing your homework in this department will help you choose the lowest cost consolidation & student loan solution for your needs. Some you will already be familiar with from your current school loans Government backed student loan programs available for consolidation: Federal Student Loans Direct Stafford & Ford Loans (subsidized and unsubsidized) FFEL Stafford Loans (subsidized and unsubsidized) Direct and Federal PLUS Loans Guaranteed Student Loans (GSL) Federal Insured Student Loans (FISL) Federal Perkins Loans Federal Supplemental Loans For Students (SLS) Loans For Disadvantaged Students (LDS) Nursing Student Loans There are several others, but these are the most common to help you get acquainted with the terms. By far, in my humble opinion of course, Government backed Federal loan programs offer the highest level of benefits for the lowest cost. The only time this isn’t the case is when your present loans are close to being paid off. In that case, consolidating student loans now would only increase the time of repayment as well as the amount you’d end up paying for the loans in the end. So be sure you understand the loans you have and if need be, call your lenders and ask them questions until you do understand. It’s the only way to make good decisions before you sign on the dotted line. Another set of terms you will no doubt want to understand if you don’t already, are the option terms: Subsidized and Unsubsidized Federal loan programs offer these options and you need to be aware of what they can do for you if you qualify. Unsubsidized loans however, are offered to everyone and no special requirements are necessary. Subsidized loans on the other hand were created by the Government for those who need extra financial aid or assistance but you must qualify to be granted this type of loan. This is undoubtedly the lowest cost alternative and one to look into further. Ask the lender you chose to explain the benefits if you need more information. Always ask questions if you don’t understand, once you sign the new consolidation student loan, there is no backing out. When it’s done, it’s done so you need to be sure you comprehend everything you are being asked to sign and what exactly the new terms are before proceeding. Should I Hire A Caterer

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

By James C So you have decided to throw a party. Great, now its time to consider all of the things you must do to make it a success. You need to make a guest list, plan decorations, arrange for a DJ, etc, etc. The list goes on and on but one of the most important tasks is arranging for the food. Food and drink will make or break your party. The question you must decide is are you going to hire a caterer or are you going to handle the food yourself. There are pluses and minuses to both. Catering Yourself If you decide to cater the party yourself, you will of course save money. Caterers can be expensive and they make up a considerable portion of a parties budget. If you are having a relatively small gathering, it is probably not worth hiring one. You might be better off just buying a few party trays from your grocery store or a favorite restaurant. Another reason to not hire a caterer is that you will be able to serve exactly what you want, not just what the caterer has to offer. You can have the exact foods that you and your guests like in the amounts that you want. Hiring A Caterer Hiring a caterer does have advantages however. Sure they can cost you money but their expertise can come in handy. If you order the food yourself you might over order, wasting money. Even worse you could end up ordering too little and run out of food or drink. That would be a party nightmare, quickly putting an end to the festivities. You want to see a crowded room empty quick, just tell your guests that there is no more food or drink. Another advantage of hiring a caterer is that it will allow you to completely enjoy your party. No running back and forth to the kitchen or checking to make sure your appetizer tray is full. You can spend your time mingling with your friends or business associates. What good is throwing a party that you cannot enjoy. Lastly, honestly answer this question. Do you have the expertise to pull it off? Caterers have the experience necessary to make sure that your party goes off smoothly. The food will be ready on time. The drinks will flow smoothly. They have thrown hundreds or even thousands of parties and they will make yours run like clockwork. Hopefully this article has helped you decide on the direction you want to take your party. Decide carefully, it is an important decision that could make or break your event. For more information on catering, visit the Caterer Directory.
